The competition for the rehabilitation of an old factory in a Catalan city, led by Gabriel Barba of BC Estudio Architects, redefines the relationship between industrial heritage and contemporary architecture. The project transforms this historic structure into a dynamic civic center and cultural galleries, offering the community a versatile and inspiring space.
Preserving the soul of the original building was a key objective. The intervention maintains the exposed brick arches and vaulted ceilings, seamlessly integrating modern concrete reinforcements to enhance structural integrity. The careful interplay of raw textures and new materials not only highlights the site's industrial past but also creates a dialogue between history and innovation.
Strategic lighting design plays a fundamental role in the project, with linear LED fixtures embedded in the ceilings and walls, accentuating the rhythmic geometry of the space. This contemporary illumination contrasts with the rough surfaces, casting dramatic shadows and enhancing the spatial experience.
Beyond its aesthetic and structural renovation, the project reactivates the site’s social function. By introducing flexible, open-plan interiors, it accommodates exhibitions, workshops, and community gatherings, adapting to the evolving needs of the city. Large arched openings connect interior and exterior spaces, fostering a sense of permeability and inviting public interaction.
This transformation exemplifies how architecture can bridge past and future, repurposing heritage structures to serve modern urban life. It stands as a powerful statement of how design, when executed with sensitivity and vision, can give new purpose to forgotten spaces while honoring their historical essence.
