Can Mercader

Built in Badalona, on the old Barcelona-France road, the Montigalà Residential Complex transformed a 23,475 m² plot of land bordered by a road and narrow, low-rise streets. Instead of the closed block model required by local regulations, architects Francisco Barba Corsini, Margarita Brender, and J.A. Padrós Galera created an open and unified neighborhood with plazas, gardens, and pedestrian streets.

The complex comprises approximately 72,000 m² of built area and includes 350 apartments—distributed in 13-story towers and low-rise blocks of 3 to 4 stories around landscaped courtyards—as well as shops, a daycare center, a café-club, and an underground parking garage for 200 cars. A network of internal pedestrian paths, terraced plazas, ramps, and green spaces fosters interaction and community life.

One of the distinctive design features is the contrast between the exposed reinforced concrete and the glossy ceramic cladding, the reddish paving stones, and the green roofs of the low-rise blocks, which serve as a visual backdrop for the towers.

The project's social innovation lay in its pedestrian-friendly, car-free environment, the flexibility of the housing units, and the harmonious integration of public spaces and greenery. Despite budgetary constraints, it was well-received by residents and the city as a model of human-centered urban housing.
